Joy of All Who Sorrow Cathedral

I spent 10 years in San Francisco and my high school was only three blocks away from the home of one of America's only Saints - St. John Maximovitch. This cathedral, in my opinion is a model in how Orthodox churches should look in many respects. Notice there are no pews. This church is Russian Orthodox.

I hope you enjoy.

I could only post 3 pics but the whole church has incredible fresco's.

The pic of the devoted kneeling is where St. John's body lays at rest.

It has the same type of interior beauty as St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City...awesome!

(regarding the exterior: I can take it or leave it)

I have had the great pleasure of attending Vigil in this church and venerating St. John's relics.

There is a wonderful set of 2 videos showing the canonization of Saint John, which took place in this Cathedral. I keep hoping that they will make it available on DVD.

Regarding the canonization, I had traveled out to San Francisco for a young man's conference and we went to the canonization. They setup huge screens in front of the church and the crowds were enormous. I was somehow able to squeeze in behind the last babushka before the doors were finally shut. Anyway, I could not see a thing and was stuck at the very rear of this beautiful cathedral. I don't know exactly why, but I decided to go up these stairs and around the ropes, being only 14 years old you see, and to my amazement I ended up in the choir loft. I was blessed to see most of the canonization from the balconies edge above everyone. Pretty cool.

I've seen three long excerpts of the canonization on youtube. Simply glorious. No wonder they call it "glorification"! :-)

I went to my best friend's marriage blessing there. It is like heavan! I venerated the relics of St John and it was very moving. The icon of St Xenia has a piece of the church she helped build in the middle of the night. If anyone here goes to SF than they should make this part of the visit.
